Writing this story is a... weird process to me. I'm throwing story bits at a wall to see if they stick! Sure, I started out with a very basic idea of what was going to happen, but now I have this whole other subplot moving in from left field, and yet another subplot lurking in the wings. This is so strange!

Usually, when I'm writing, I have a fairly good idea of what I'm trying to accomplish. I had the final scene in mind for "Ember, Ash, and Kindling" from the very beginning, and I was just writing to reach it. But this NaNo is just "words! I must words on pages!", and shockingly enough, to me, I haven't used SUDDENLY, NINJAS to increase word-count yet. All the fights so far were planned.

Also, I'm finding that being willing to stick in [name] or [city] helps me a lot with just keeping things flowing. I can come back and hash out names later.

The really tricky things so far have been making sure I keep my continuity guide updated as I write and not getting too distracted by Luna posting new fics.

Speaking of fics, I still haven't finished off Oracle Zuko. I know what the last scene needs to be, I'm just not sure how to start it off. "All art is recovery from the first line."

Of course, I keep looking at the story as it is now and wondering if it's a satisfying story. I am sure Floranna will be happy with it (Floranna, I love you, but you'd probably be happy with two thousand words of Oracle Zuko/Jet smut in the woods), but I'm not sure if it's going to be worth the wait for anybody else.

I suppose this is what beta-readers are for: to tell you if you've fucked up the landing.
Can't manage NaNoing tonight, so I'm dorking around with my Days of Future Past DZ AU. Angstpocalypse!

---

Needlenose eyed the circuit laid out in front of him critically. The pattern of its teal leads against the pink semiconductor irritated him. It was ugly, jarring and tangled, almost impossible to set up for a fabber to produce. He couldn't achieve the visual effect he wanted without sacrificing its functionality, and he couldn't make it mass-producible without sacrificing both functionality and aesthetics.

Sure, he could make up for the loss of efficiency by splitting everything across five or six circuits. But they still wouldn't be mass-producible, and they definitely wouldn't be chic.

Besides, Perceptor made fun of him for how many of his Spinister-chips he already had installed.

If he stopped insisting on the colors, he could rearrange the leads to achieve functionality and mass-producibility.

"I like the colors," Needlenose muttered, antennae flicking back.

Putting so many of Spinister's sensor-baffles in one circuit was difficult enough without frivolous patterns and colors.

"If I wanted something completely utilitarian," he snapped, "I'd go to Shockwave."

In another room, he heard and felt Hairsplitter sigh and Sunbeam say, "Dude, you're arguing with Spinister again."

So he was. For years after Spinister's death, he hadn't understood why he couldn't get over the helicopter. He'd had thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of lovers throughout his life. Some of them he'd even cared for as much as he had Spinister, and they'd faded from importance inside a year. But Spinister stayed in his head.

Or, rather, Spinister stayed in Singe and Hairsplitter's heads.

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door.' Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and...well, you know the drill. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!
Title: Be Fruitful
Series: G1, mostly cartoon
Characters: Dr. Susan Hoffman/Onslaught, Hot Spot, Blades, the Constructicons
Rating: PG
Word Count: 2100+
Summary: Onslaught is pregnant. He doesn't understand how that can be, since he hasn't slept with another Transformer in millions of years. What with being locked in a box and all.
Author's Notes: For those of you who don't keep track of obscure comics characters, Dr. Susan Hoffman is made of awesome. Also, this fic proves that I love Dr. Hoffman/Onslaught like whoa.

For the purposes of this fic, I am assuming an established relationship between the two of them.

Things to do in October: finish a draft of Oracle Zuko. Lock it in a box. Pull it out again in three months for editing.

But I want that fic off my plate in time for NaNo, because I am totally NaNoing this year.

I am really, really vexed at how I've lost all my mojo for writing Transformers outside of memes.

Also, writing sabbatical ends in a week. Whee, back to beating my head against auction fics! *sighs* Oracle Zuko is probably going to be over 10k by the time I'm finished with it.

I want some Silverbolt/Motormaster, dammit.

19. When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

It depends on the bunny. Some of them, I have to write right away. Some of them, I can sit and let percolate in the back of my brain while I do other things. Generally, I don't write ideas down. If it's good enough to write, then it's good enough to remember.

Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

I'm a bit hampered in answering this, because I haven't had any real inspiration since I finished "Ember, Ash, and Kindling". I've been writing for prompts a lot over the last few years - I find them quite inspiring, usually. Even if they're something I wouldn't normally write, getting kicked out of my comfort zone long enough to scribble something is helpful.

17. Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

Most of the time, they're the bane of my existence. Up until I actually had to post it, "Ember, Ash, and Kindling" was just 'the Maiko Big Bang'. A lot of the time, titles are even harder for me than summaries. Since I'll cover the same themes in multiple fandoms, I have to come up with different-ish enough titles that still fit the story... Which is why I have a Thor fic called "Foundling" about Laufey realizing how Odin came to have Loki, and I have a TF: Animated fic called "Found Child" about Emirate Xaaron finding an Allspark child.

Given how rarely I write chaptered stories and how difficult titles are for me, chapters do not get separate titles.

16. Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

For me to read a story, it needs to have a summary. (Exceptions: high recs from friends or people who know I'd like it anyway.) However, writing summaries is a pain in the ass for me. Trying to find the balance between "vague enough not to spoil" and "interesting enough to entice people to read" is tricky, tricky.

Coming up with them is usually an exercise in "what is the story about, what is going on, and how can I encapsulate that in a handful of sentences without giving the game away?". Thus, coming up with summaries is of the devil. *groans*

15. Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

Rape. Warn for it ever single time. Warn for dubious consensuality, too. It is a completely dickish to spring that kind of thing unwarned for on readers.

I also warn for detailed high violence and the nastier bits of horror I use.

The strangest thing I've warned for is either cannibalism or Thanatari. Not really sure if I actually used the Thanatari warning or not, but if I have, that's definitely the strangest. Otherwise, the cannibalism.

14. Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

As high or as low as a story needs to go. I tend to have a harder time with NC-17 because I need to be in the right sort of mood to enjoy writing smut. Most of my stories tend to average out around PG/PG-13, because I like writing violence, adult situations, and cussing.
12. Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

No, and I have no interest in doing so.

13. Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I am not even entirely sure what this question means!

That being said, I prefer to rely on canon for my writing. Any fanon I choose to use has to fit within the constraints of the canon and make sense. Thus, One's For Sorrow. The assumptions behind that fic have shaped the way I write Long Feng ever since I developed them, which was a good while before I actually wrote that fic.

If I'm writing a story ostensibly set in the canon universe, I'm going to use the canon rules. It's only when I start getting weirdly AU that I start throwing the rules out the window. Which is probably just as well, because I hate the sparkbonding trope/fanon in Transformers fandom with an abiding passion and inevitably write it going horribly wrong when I do write it.

11. Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

I love to write adventure, horror, and romance. Not necessarily all in the same fic. However, I'm also the sort of person who just goes with whatever story is in her head. Sometimes (a lot of the time), that's just a scene's worth of stuff. In my head, for instance, both Conduct Unbecoming1 and Found Child are part of the same story-arc. I've just never gotten around to writing all the rest of it.

I'm told I have a really bad habit of writing cliffhangers or not wrapping up stories properly.

1. This is getting changed to be about Beta in the near future.

10. Pairings – Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write, or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

I... Fuck if I can remember. Well, yes, there are some pairings I love that I cannot write for crap. But whether or not I like a pairing is irrelevant to whether or not I can write it. What I write may not be nice, but I'm still able to write it.

For me, pairing fic doesn't have to be romantic and fluffy. One of my personal favorite bits of Transformers slash I've written is from the pov of one Autobot falling into obsession with a young, jerkass member of the Decepticons. There is lots of UST and denial. It makes me prrr.

Sometimes I have to work to find an angle to make two people fit together. This is often where things go from romantic to potentially disturbing. Tracks/Sunstreaker took me a while to figure out because I couldn't imagine Sunstreaker admitting it or Tracks being interested without a compelling reason to be interested.

09. Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

- DragonBallZ: never actually wrote pairings for this
- Sailor Moon: Ami/Rubeus, Usagi/anyone
- The Matrix: Smith/Neo, Trinity/Neo
- Jackie Chan Adventures: (adult) Jade/Hak Foo, Jackie/Valmont, Jackie/Viper
- Transformers: Motormaster/Silverbolt, Megatron/Starscream, Tracks/Sunstreaker
- Avatar: the Last Airbender: Ozai/Ursa, Mai/Zuko, Long Feng/Song
- Harry Potter: nyet
- Robin McKinley's Damar: not so much, really
- Seanan McGuire's Velveteen vs.: again, not so much
- Stargate SG-1: Yu/Daniel, Sam/Jack
- The Mummy: Evie/Rick, Imhotep/Evie
- Jim Butcher's Codex Alera: Tavi/Kitai
- Star Wars: the Clone Wars: Rex/Ahsoka
- Thor (2011 movie): Thor/Loki, Loki/Tony Stark
- Marvel (mutants): Wildchild/Northstar
- Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files: Harry/Susan, Harry/Murphy
- ReBoot: Bob/Dot, Matrix/AndrAIa
- The Bible: nyet
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Will/Elizabeth, Will/Davy Jones, Will/Tia Dalma
- Tamora Pierce's Immortals quartet: Daine/Rikash, Ozorne/Numair, Ozorne/Daine
- Dr. Who: nyet
Since I am in need of cheering and since I am not actually writing anything but Transformers right now... Three requests per person, I promise to write at least one, please stick to G1, Animated, or Deadzone. For G1, I can definitely do toon, I can fake Marvel comics, and I can do IDW up to All Hail Megatron.

Since I'm hoping to app Sunstreaker at some point in the future, I'd appreciate a couple of Sunny requests.
