Out of Order

***

It's easy to keep hold of what hasn't stirred,
easy to plan what hasn't occurred.
It's easy to shatter delicate things,
easy to scatter little things.
Do things before they happen.
Get them straight before they get mixed up.

- from Chapter 64 of the Tao Te Ching, translated by Ursula K. LeGuin

Sideways knew the language of angles and curves, the precise way to turn to step around a corner to someplace else. His optic-glass was laced with materials born from divinely-inspired madness, his body shaped to walk around the horses. His soul, if what he had could be called such a thing, was born after Time but before the laws of reality, in the firstborn universe ripped from Primal Chaos by the Cosmic Dragon.

He was not a Transformer, whatever else he might be. He was a devotee of Primal Chaos, destruction and creation all bound together in paradox and madness.

He was enchanted.

"...and there came a hero who said: 'Hurt not the world, nor the sea, nor the spires, nor the very fabric of time,' but the hero would not prevail, nor would he surrender." Light flickered across Fahrenheight's optics as he read directly from the Covenant of Primus loaded into his memory banks. One of the older translations-

No, Sideways corrected himself, one of the newer ones. The older ones hadn't decided that 'Earth' and 'trees' were mistranslations or possibly metaphors. That would change, of course-

Except it wouldn't, because the Beast Wars would never happen here.

Yet they must have, or the world would not exist as it was. Optimus Prime and Megatron would never have awakened at all, the humans would never have arisen, the Earth would spin in the Vox's weavings still.

Except the Beast Wars never will happen because Cybertron was all but dead. It limped along, held to life only by the god within and the god without. Life faded with every passing day, the damages to the planet too extensive to support the Transformers still on it, the damage to Unicron too deep to allow the god to travel on.

Paradox was the nature of Primal Chaos, and his engine purred at the thought of every unbegun, completed action.

Fahrenheight trailed off, the flashes of text vanishing from inside his optics. His mouth quirked in a little smile as he gazed down at Sideways. "You are not usually this moved by the Word."

"I am moved by your voice," Sideways said truthfully. "You speak with such passion, it would be hard not to be moved."

Fahrenheight's voice resonated with passion while reading, sent shiver-sparks through Sideways's door-wings at the power of it. Fahrenheight loved his god, loved his duty, oh, he was mad with the passion of it burning in him.

Sideways wanted some of that passion for himself.

"You love Primus," Sideways murmured, optics flicking dim. "Do you love me?"

"Of course I do!" Fahrenheight protested, reaching out to touch one of Sideways's sensor-horns. "You know I do, I do everything I can to keep you safe in these troubled times, even though you're- Decepticon, even if it means not rejoining the other Autobots. I love you."

The symbols on Sideways's doors smiled, purple and sharp. Fahrenheight's gaze shied away from them, refusing to see. As usual.

Sideways twisted his helm away from Fahrenheight's touch. "Not as much as you love your god."

"Sideways, I-" Fahrenheight stopped, looking lost and empty, optics flickering dim and bright. "Sideways, you know that's different. You know-" Something in his resolve crumpled. "You know I don't love Primus in the same way I love you."

The symbols on Sideway's doors smiled sharper.

Close enough.

For now.

-End-
