Day Seven

07. Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

Oh yes. I consider stories one of the best ways to present opinions about characters, in fact, because of this. You are more likely to make me buy "Spinister is a creepy bastard, Needlenose is a psychotic fop of an artist, together they snog" with stories than with explaining it to me in mind-numbing detail.

When I am first getting a feel for a character, I try to avoid other people's fics about that character because of this. I want to settle down my own interpretations of a character solely based on the canon before I open myself to outside influences.

There's a fair amount of other people's fingerprints on my character interpretations from reading their stories. The afore-mentioned Spinister/Needlenose bit comes from Luna. A lot of my Jet interpretation comes from Rin. Then there's other stuff where I can say "I was probably influenced but damned if I can pick out anything specific because it has been years".

Of course, I've also had my opinions of characters change by writing fics. I used to seriously dislike Hahn before I wrote "Tide and Time". Having to get inside his head and write him as a person striving in his own right really changed how I looked at him.
