Advent #8: Red Mask
Title: Red Mask

"Hmm." Jade peered at the half of a metal mask Jackie had left on the counter. Three curved spines of metal curled along the lower half, all of them going down into points near the break point. A bright green 'eye-piece' that wasn't quite opaque appeared in the upper half, and then there was the broken off crest. Most of the underlying metal was a deep red.
She glanced towards the backroom where Uncle was telling Jackie about the latest set of heebie-jeebies he'd gotten, then she glanced towards the door of the shop. Just her and the mask and her uber-costume needing one little finishing touch...
"No, Jade." Tohru stepped dang lightly these days, and those two little words made her near jump out of her skin.
Mistake #1: Forgetting where Tohru was.
"Hey, Big T!" She turned and smiled brightly up at him. "Check out what Jackie brought back from his dig in- Hey, where were you digging at, Jackie?"
Jackie stuck his head out from the backroom. "Colorado. What are you up to, Jade?"
"Nothing! Just showing Tohru your cool mask!" Oops. Mistake #2: Saying the mask was anything other than boring. Now he would be watching her like a hawk.
Jackie didn't look convinced as to her innocence. "It's going to the museum in the morning, Jade. Besides," he added with a chuckle. "I'm taking you to the party. I wouldn't let you take that mask out of the shop."
"Hmph." Jade folded her arms. "Security and logistics," she muttered. "The two things that wreck a lot of good plans."
Tohru smiled and picked up the mask. His eyes widened abruptly, and he almost yelped as he dropped it. The half-mask clattered against the countertop, and Jade swore she saw a flash of something appear in the eye-piece.
"Whoa," she said softly.
