"The side-pipe extends the length of three Seekers, then turns downward. It's definitely water that I'm swimming in," Reflector reported, turning in place so that he could scan the edges of the clearing. Something about it seemed to have him on edge, or perhaps it was just that he was all by himself up here.

Not by himself, Steadfast reminded herself. Just because there was only one of his components up here did not mean he was by himself. She was here, after all. "I don't need a map of the place. Let me know when you find the energy source."

He glanced at her, optics giving the impression of shuttering. "As you wish."

Slaggit, now she'd gone and irritated him. Lovely. She turned side-on to him, her own optics scanning the clearing's edge. The trees still stirred in a wind that her wings couldn't feel, but the grasses in the clearing stood absolutely still. A flash of movement caught her optic-

-Reflector. He was turning around again.

Her ailerons flexed slowly as she depowered her arm-guns back to stand-by levels. Settle down, settle down. So the weather was a little weird around here. It happened. It rained frogs some places, didn't it? Nothing to get so tense over. Be at peace, wait for the winds to come up. Steady, steady, steady.

She turned her attention away from the forest's edge to the sky above, watching the wisps of white against the vault of the heavens. It soothed her soul as nothing else could.

"I seem to have found a whirlpool," Reflector said suddenly. "The hard way."

***

The whirlpool only spat one of him out. The other remained trapped in the crushing embrace of the water, struggling against the currents but being continually forced back into the center. After a time, he just settled there, keeping himself midway up the water-cyclone. Optics blazed bright as he struggled to see around him, find out what caused this whirl of water.

He hoped he was midway up. The sudden swirling madness of the water had gotten him all turned around.

***

The third component waded through the shallows of a flooded cavern, vaguely aware of the tiny blind fish swimming away from him. The whirlpool had dumped him down another chute from his other component, and he'd followed it for lack of anything better to do. The passage had curved and twisted back on itself many times, and had sometimes gotten so narrow that he had despaired of fitting through. But there always seemed to be just enough give in the rock for him to force his way through with much scraping.

It let out at the far end of this cavern, pipe changing to pool. Now he stood shin-deep in water and muck with only his optic-light to see by.

What it showed him wasn't promising.

"There is a table of stone raised out of the water with hardened walls of mud. Inside of it, there are three ovoids - I can see that they're speckled but not what color they would be in sunlight. They feel hard to the touch, like stone," Reflector relayed. "The detector reports them as the energy source we're looking for. I'm afraid I'll only be able to carry one out, however."

The camera-component gazed up at Steadfast. "What are your orders?"
