The quote I assigned to Elita when I seriously started characterizing her for the first time was one I lifted from Discworld. It was one of Carrot's lines, actually, when Carrot was being scary.

I figured I ought to share it.

"Personal isn't the same as important."

There's a reason that particular Carrot line stuck with me. He's a scary man under those "I am a nice dorf boy" layers.

We'll know PTerry is winding the Discworld series down when Carrot finally ditches the act and turns out to be scarier than Vetinari and Vimes combined.

... I find this a strangely enchanting idea. Then again, I think Elita has a temper under that cool "oh, how cute, Shockwave is tracking my girls; best not breach security by letting them in" exterior.

I dunno. I don't think it's an act, exactly... I mean, sure, Carrot's got multiple layers, but they're all layers of Carrot. Calling his obvious outer layers an act is kind of like saying that the top layer of a birthday cake isn't really cake.

Hmm, a good point, and I probably should clarify; not really an act so much as he's holding something in reserve, i.e. a mind that does simple, decent things, but in such a way that the complex repercussions of his actions are often ruthless but also basically for the common good (i.e. Ironcrust and the issue of unpaid taxes, off the top of my head). It's just really interesting to imagine what he could do with a mind like that, and why he doesn't...and still like him because he's often clueless re; Angua and thinks a Mister Potato Head disguise will make him unrecognizable.

As Casanunda is to the dwarves, so Carrot is to previous generations of Ankh-Morpork kings (finishing with Lorenzo)? All the intellect, decency, and general love of humanity had to come out somewhere, I guess...
