In 2007, Jim McDonald wrote a post on Making Light about go-bags.

I think it's about time I put some together for my family.

He's a professional emergency worker/paramedic.

What's shocking about being prepared for anything to go wrong?

To me it seems like massive overkill, like digging yourself a nuclear shelter while under no particular threat of nuclear war. But then, as I realised after commenting (which is why I should really stop and think before hitting the button), I live in a country with no natural disasters and few man-made ones on the scale of the SoCal fires. From my perspective, and that of most people in the UK, a kit like that would be used only under the most freakish and unlikely of circumstances, but plenty of people in the world are not so lucky. So yeah, basically, typical "comment failing to take into account the fact that the internet exists in more than one country" on my part...

Fascinating reading the trivia some people think would be important at a moment like that. Becky, if you want to make some go-bags, start with a medium-sized backpack per person, then add in a duffel for the optional stuff.
