Blind!Ozai and Sozin's Comet (and Hakoda)
A bit of a fragment, scribbled for my own enjoyment.
Hakoda prowled through the Fire Palace. Behind him, distantly, he could hear fighting in the halls. His men, the Earth Kingdom men, fighting the firebender guards. Just so he could slip on by and find the Firelord.
Red hung in the air, fire roaring and his blood roaring. Sozin's Comet, he thought bitterly. It would all come down to today, to whether or not young Aang could kill Iroh. Prince Lu Ten was already dead, betrayed by one of Princess Azula's Dai Li. The other prince had vanished, rumor among the prison-guards whispered. The princess lay in a deep sleep from which she did not waken, destroyed by Iroh's fury.
Which left only the brother. Hakoda had never even heard Prince Ozai's name before the talk came he had been crowned Firelord as Iroh was crowned Dragon Emperor.
Fire roared, the sound beating at his ears. He paused, listening- this wasn't just the roar of the comet. He slid open a door and silently crossed someone's apartments to the balcony.
There, in the courtyard below, a man firebent. His skin was sheened with sweat, muscles sliding smoothly under skin as he danced with flame and lightning. His face was obscured by long, dark hair. He made no move to push it back from his face, as if it didn't matter that it covered his eyes. Gold glittered in his hair- the Firelord's crown.
Hakoda's eyes narrowed, and he turned to examine the walls around him. They were smooth, a testament to a palace built for defense, but below the balcony was a soft-looking bit of greenery. With a sigh, he reluctantly lowered himself down, letting the shrubbery break his fall. The sound of roaring fire swallowed the crunching as leaves and branches broke. Hakoda groaned, picked prickly twigs out of the most uncomfortable places, and palmed a knife.
He took a breath as he looked over the situation. He'd have to pass through fire as silently and swiftly as possible. If he didn't take the Firelord by surprise, he'd die and so would a lot of other people once this Ozai realized his palace was under attack.
Hakoda crept forward, keeping himself behind the Firelord as well as he could while the man danced around the courtyard. Several times, he thought surely the man should have seen him. Perhaps, though, Ozai was as arrogant as his brother.
He was within two arm's lengths of Ozai when the fire died. The Firelord stood still, his back to Hakoda, his head slightly tilted.
"You're cold." Ozai reached up, pushing hair back from his face, and turned towards Hakoda. "I would never have noticed if the Comet wasn't in the sky."
Old burn-scars, shiny pink and well-tended, covered the skin around his eyes. The Firelord himself had no eyes, only gaping black sockets, the edges scarred in a way that hinted at how deep the burn-scars must go. The planes of his face were beautiful, but it was so hard to look at anything but his lack-of-eyes.
Hakoda swallowed, knowing his nightmares would never forget this man's face.
A smirk curved Ozai's mouth. "The blindfold is with my robes. Fetch it if you find my scars so ugly."
"I think not," Hakoda growled, finding his voice again.
The Firelord tilted his head slightly. "You are not Fire Nation. The accent's wrong. Azula's Dai Li weren't so cold as you - Water Tribe?"
"Southern." Hakoda strode forward, knife hard in his hand. Some part of him regretted killing a blind man, but the hard part of him who had fought for three years recognized how dangerous this blind man still was. Someone who could still firebend so skillfully could not be left alive.
"Father's pet tribe."
The words distracted Hakoda for one crucial moment, then a force like ten thousand hammer-blows struck his chest. It burned, and he screamed as he was flung back. His head cracked against the stone courtyard hard enough to make him see stars, and the center of his chest felt like a burn ten thousand times worse than any he'd ever before felt.
Ozai blew smoke away from his fingers. "I'm disappointed, Water Tribe. You underestimated me."

This is a new one. Not sure what else I'll do with it. The self-indulgent side of me wants master/prisoner Hakozai, but Sozin's Comet is kinda the series finale. Also, I like Aang. Having him lose to Iroh makes me sad. D:

He is definitely much more striking, especially when he's not wearing his blindfold. Sadly, there's a lot more limitations on him than in canon - a blind Firelord is only allowed because Iroh is still going to be around to rule, you note.
On the yummy side, he knows every plane, every dip and curve, every peak of Ursa's body from 'seeing' her. ^_^

That is, indeed, very yummy. ^-^
Is there any more of this AU?
