[AtLA Ficlet] Anniversary

Title: Anniversary
Characters: Ursa/Ozai
Word Count: 300+

Anniversary

***

Ursa considered the problem before her. The sun shone bright and warm, the sea leapt cool and frothy, the sand lay smooth and still. Zuko was asleep in his bassinet, finally old enough to sleep the entire night through. Her brother-in-law was back from the front, but still fifty miles away from their little cottage in its secluded clove.

Her husband had a book in hand.

"Ozai," she said, and he didn't even glance up from the page. Normally, this wouldn't have bothered her - she was an adult woman, and she did not need her husband by her side every single moment of the day. But today was different. Today was the fifth anniversary of their marriage.

"I thought we might go swimming," she said, her tone light. "There are crawfish in the springhouse. We'll boil them tonight and suck the juices off our fingers while we watch the stars come out."

Gold eyes looked up at her, and she leaned forward to rest her hands on his knees. Ozai flicked looks rapidly between her and the page he was on, and she knew the battle was halfway won.

When they told her she would marry the Second Prince of the Fire Nation, Firelord Sozin's grandson, she'd expected her marriage trouble to stem from her being Roku's grand-daughter. She had not expected Ozai to care not at all, or the way he'd been almost virginally inexperienced on their wedding night, or how difficult it was to get books away from him. Ozai still didn't care she shared the blood of the traitor Avatar, five years had taught him more than enough of what to do with and to her, but the books were still a sticking point.

"So let's go for a swim so we can work up an appetite." Ursa smiled and straightened herself, hands going to the belt holding her robes shut. "It'll be fun."

She turned away, undoing her belt. The robes fell off her shoulders, puddling in a pool of red silk on the floor, and she heard Ozai suck in a breath.

She glanced back at him, nude as the sunrise. "Are you coming?"

*grins*

Have I mentioned that I love your social-interaction-fail!Ozai yet today? I know that feeling of 'something'shappening don'tknowwhattodo stick with what you know!' nose-in-a-bookery unfortunately well.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Ozai isn't so much social-interaction-fail as (initially) not very good with women who are attracted to him/he's attracted to. Also, he really loves his books. When he's with someone he trusts, he's perfectly happy to nestle down and ignore the rest of the world. <3

Oh, lovely! :) I really like this little slice of life. I also second weirdlet's motion about Ozai's social awkwardness. Zuko had to get it from somewhere, right? ;) I also like the idea of their marriage growing over the course of these five years, not being exactly love at first sight. ;)

Zuko did it get from somewhere, but Ozai has largely learned how to deal with it by this point. He just really enjoys his books and he trusts Ursa, so he's comfortable with tuning out the world around her.

No, it's not love at first sight for them with me. Not having especial objections to each other comes almost immediately but liking each other and loving each other takes some time and effort.
