Rain pattered against the red umbrella, and Ami walked close beside the upperclassman, clutching her books to her chest. She'd been studying at the park, enjoying the breezes and the cloudy day. It helped her learn her biology better, which made Okaasan happy.
A few minutes ago, it had started drizzling. She'd hastily gathered up her books and shoved them under her coat. Then the upperclassman who'd been playing with a Frisbee by himself had come over and offered to walk her home. He was a tall, red-headed gaijin, and something about him unsettled her. But, she had pointed out ruthlessly to herself, just because he was a gaijin didn't mean he was a bad person.
"Thank you again, Takagi-san," she said quietly as they approached her house.
"You're welcome, Mizuno-san." He smiled, and his smile had an edge. "Good luck with your studies."
She smiled back as he held the umbrella over her, then quickly unlocked the door. Should she invite him in-? But he was almost a stranger. She frowned, trying to sort out what would be polite and safe.
As if sensing her dilemma, Tagaki-san grinned. "I've got to go if I want to make my train, Mizuno-san. I'll see you at school, ne?"
"Hai." She sketched a quick bow, and he returned it then headed off into the rain. She stood in the doorway for a long time, watching him slowly fade into the grey, red hair and red umbrella fading last of all.
