There were no classes for modern history outside of Ba Sing Se when Thanh arrived on the University staff. It was a chancy subject, too fraught with drawing the attention of the Dai Li and besides, most of their students didn't need to know it.

But they wanted to, Thanh noticed during his first semester. They wanted to, and if they couldn't be taught it, they'd go looking for answers some other way.

That would be troublesome.

His smile isn't kind when he tells the Dean what courses he's going to teach next semester.
