I Have Issues

You don't want a subscription. I don't want a subscription.

But right now...
- I don't want to read fanfiction from Order of the Lotus because I am snarly over the mod singling out one of the fics to say "this one is extra good".
- I am very wary of The Legend of Korra because of things like the anti-bender sentiments, Aang's kid, the prospect of finding out what happened to the characters from the main show.
- I am snarly at a number of people on Rin's meme for asking her to write my 'verses. At least one of them I need to build a bridge and get over because it's a concept we've both played with. At least one of them was very definitely a case of asking her to write something mine because they forgot it was mine. And the third has me growling as it is using a specific thing that is identical to one of my far too personal AUs, and maybe they mean for Rin to do her own thing with it, but...
- I am astonishingly bored by work. Also, we've lost half a dozen tellers in the last two months.

Personally, I like throwing same prompts (my own prompts, not someone else's) around, just to see what different people write from it. If I am one of those people you are talking about, I am so sorry and I promise to not to do it again.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Floranna, I think you are capable of telling the difference between "same prompt" and "a particular, specific AU".

[identity profile] floranna.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, it's midnight now here, I am sleepy and completely paranoid. If something can be even distantly linked to myself, especially when it's negative (okay, only when it's negative), I think it's about me.

I am sorry to bother you. *embarassed*

[identity profile] silverhunteress.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
*Bows apologetically* Sorry. I remembered her bits from Vampatar and knew you did it as well, I thought she was the other collaborator. Next time I'll make sure the AU I'm asking for belongs to that author, sorry again.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

Was this from the last exchange? I can't find any comments by the mods on the three fics posted so far.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the gift for [livejournal.com profile] chisakami, which is locked for some odd reason.

[identity profile] clockwerkchaos.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... huh I just realized I wrote for the exchange, but never actually joined it.

Woops. Now I'm curious enough to go correct that.

[identity profile] clockwerkchaos.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
They lock fics with smut in them. Is that the reason?

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-22 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. I haven't read the fic in question.

[identity profile] clockwerkchaos.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, this?
-
Warnings: VERY AU (in a good way - btw, that is not the author speaking, that is my opinion)
-

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Same. I'm not loving the idea of a new series where Iroh and Aang are definitely dead. :( I also don't think I like the idea of not being able to play around with what might have happened after the first show without this new series rendering it all AU. =\

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Giving a definite closing to the characters' lives just makes me infinitely unhappy. But I tend to be that way a lot of the time about such things.

I suppose what I will do is have my "AtLA-canon compliant" series and have an "AtLA and Korra-canon compliant" series, should I be moved to write stuff involving the Legend of Korra.

I'm sure by the time it airs, I'll quite like Korra, mind. But I'd probably be overall happier if it was further off from when the original show happened. (On the plus side, we might get old badasses from the teens.)

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like I'm in the same boat as you, more or less. I guess I'm just not looking forward to this new series very much, considering I didn't care for how s3 went. I'm also worried that people are getting hyped up over Korra only to have her be some kind of Action!Sue that lacks the depth of the old characters.

That, and this anti-bending thing going on...sounds too much like friggin' Xmen and whatnot. =\

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the show has the same creators as the original. So it's not as if we have that much to worry about on the characterization front.

The anti-bending thing could be very good or very bad. The thing is, with a world full of superhumans, I'd be surprised if people weren't unhappy with the superhumans. Especially after how the Fire Nation's war was largely propelled forward by superhumans fighting.

On the other hand, the Earth Kingdom cities seem to use earthbending as a form of technology (Omashu's stone-slides, Ba Sing Se's trains), so while I can see there being some anti-bender sentiments, I can't see it being institutionalized.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit worried--they pretty much shafted a whole bunch of characters, but I suppose that if we compare to what else is out there on TV, it's not so bad.

I just find it weird that anti-bending sentiment is there at all considering how beneficial it can be on a multitude of levels. You make sense, but over all, yeah, how the hell will that work in the show.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"A whole bunch of characters"?

Well, Ozai alone is reason enough for an anti-bending sentiment. But I could easily imagine it being a thing where combat 'bending is something people are afraid of and hate, especially given the War.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wait wait wait--my bad. It's the development a lot of characters got shafted on--characterization, however, pretty well done.

Ozai and Azula, sure--but it seems strange to me that bending wasn't used to promote agricultural and economic growth around the world after the war. I mean, that really seems like something the Gaang would be a part of to help rebuild the damaged nations.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there was that. The main characters got to develop, but the secondary characters? And let us not speak of Ozai and his near-total lack of personality beyond "BURN DESTROY DEATH!". Or Chit Sang. Or all of the kids who weren't the Gaang or Suki getting put on a bus after showing up for Day of Black Sun. (I tend to assume that stuff after Boiling Rock got compressed/cut for time, but blargh.)

Well, I've got no idea what form this anti-bender sentiment will take in the Legend of Korra. I'm just saying if I was doing it, there'd be a strong hatred of people using 'bending to fight with.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on all counts. I was so mad that a large portion of s3 was filler when my speculations for s3 were much, much more fun and character/plot fulfilling.

And I came up with it inside that ten month hiatus.

There sure as hell wasn't any of this bullshit where the Gaang suddenly decides to wait until after the comet to take on Ozai. >=\

Sweetheart, if you were writing the series, I'd have no worries about enjoying the show at all.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
The last half of season three really does strike me as the writers finding out they suddenly had a lot fewer episodes to play with than they thought they did. *gnaws on things*

On the other hand, we got "The Boiling Rock". <333333333

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
From what I understand, a lot of the S2 writers left before the last season was completed, so a lot of their scenarios got scrapped and they had to whip up some new stuff. Which explains a lot. O_o

I also suspect they blew a bunch of their budget on Mark Hamill, so lines for Teo, Haru and the Duke got cut after the 13th episode of the season.

The Boiling Rock was probably one of the few decent episodes of S3, agreed.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I can't go back into the post on [livejournal.com profile] avatar_fans because if I do, I'm going to gnaw someone's face off.

While I disagree with your assessment of Mai, you're right, it's something we're going to have to agree to disagree on, and it's not like you hate her. I just tend to get twitchy when I feel people are giving reasons for disliking a character that don't match what I perceived in canon. (And I currently have someone arguing with me for saying Toph is a Sue, so you know. Perceptions differ.)

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
:(

I fully understand. I was the same way about the fanbrats that were going after Song just because she tried to help Zuko. I think I'm a little more sensitive when it comes to Mai's treatment of her brother simply because my own brother is almost 12 years younger than me, and it hit a little too close to home.

Ok, I like Toph, but you gotta admit--she's a powerhouse whose flaws are more or less written in as her just being 'rough around the edges' (i.e. suck it up and deal with them). She may not be a full-on Sue, but she has a loooot of the tendencies. Katara had the same problem in parts of S3, but with Toph, it was fairly constant.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
*strokes* Yeah, I can see where that definitely influences things. (How could people go after Song? D:)

I like Toph, but yeah. Sue. If someone had written a fic of S2 with Toph, before S2 aired, they'd be mocked roundly.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I knew you'd understand.

People went after Song because she dared to touch their precious Zuzukins. To be fair, it was mostly the rabid Zootara crowd of the old days, who couldn't appreciate the fact that Song is the first person to make Zuko realize that he isn't the only good person that has been hurt by his father's war, bringing him ever closer to being someone Katara could tolerate. =\

This is so true. In this sense, the creators are exceptionally lucky, because you fell in love with the other characters so much that you start to overlook the obvious writing-flaws in the newer ones.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
*nousles happily*

*grumbles* People like that are why I loathe Zutara. And Zuko/Katara was the first Avatar pairing I got into. But there's so many of the Zutara fans who are dicks about the other female characters that I just can't stand their pairing anymore.

See, I don't inherently view Toph's collection of traits as flaws (well, the way her blindness is treated is a flaw - it's only disabling to her when she fights, uh, Aang and she can't read. whoop-de-doo, she always has one of the others around to read for her when it's important). To me, with characters, it's all about how they're handled. Toph was handled well, I think, but... That collection of traits made it harder to handle things well than it needed to have been.

Also, the Toph-worship in fandom is really annoying.

[identity profile] tsukiryuu.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
*cough* I liked Toph because she was a breath of fresh air when introduced. I had been soooo tired of the sexism that the Avatar world seemed to display to female benders or females in general. The E.K. liked females to just look pretty and stay out of the way; N.W.T was all girls are healers!!; and so forth. Really, until Toph was introduced, the only female benders were F.N. So I liked that she was blind, female and kicking ass. And while I still love her to bits, she pretty much got no character development in the series. Hell, she didn't even get a life changing fieldtrip with Zuko like the others, and the supposes reason? She didn't need it. Uh yeah, I think she did. She needed to get knocked down and learn some humility in order to really grow. Never happened though.

Haha, I was gonna post a comment in the girls thread after seeing the one for the guys in the comm today. Then I saw the comments and was like - so not touching.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
You have good points about Toph's lack of character development. That's probably why she never hit the "I love this character" marks with me - I like her, but she's like Suki and Yue to me. She's just... A character who I don't find interesting to write.

You are wise to not touch that thread with a ten-foot pole. >_>

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
=D

I agree, sometimes the fans can be the most detrimental thing to the fandom. I'm fortunate to have found the sane shippers who agree that while Zutara wasn't canon and wasn't going to be, at least the show made it so that they friends by the end of it--which is more than enough to start their semi-AU fix it fic.

Toph was handled well, but sadly, at the end of the day, she's still a powerhouse that didn't get a whole lot of resolution. Which is sad.

I try to view it in the same vein as Chuck Norris jokes--funny, but obviously exaggerated.

[identity profile] beckyh2112.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
There are some people I'll read Zutara from, but they're generally people I'll read anything from and they like Maiko and Soko as much as they like Zutara. I'm very wary of reading something Zutara from people who say they don't like Mai.

I've reached the point where most Chuck Norris jokes aren't funny to me anymore. >_>

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing--it seems like the only way to guarantee against character bashing is to go with a multi-ship writer.

Chuck Norris is funny to me because I remember when he got his ass kicked in the Bruce Lee movie. ;D
