Long Feng looked down at the boy and thought of the kind of pretty idealism that forgot there were other reasons for doing things. "There were less than a handful of Joo Dee who were women like you seem to imagine them to be. They have all left Ba Sing Se. Of the rest, many are criminals who would have been executed. Joo Dee, who just took my Dai Li within the palace, murdered half a dozen men in the Lower Ring."

The Avatar blinked, and Long Feng knew this particular fight was already won.

Before the boy could muster up an argument, Long Feng continued, "The rest chose this, Avatar Aang. They could not live with their memories, so they asked to be taken away from that. We told all of those they wouldn't be themselves anymore. We introduced them to Joo Dee. Some left, and we let them ago. Some still agreed, and they became Joo Dee."

"Why would anyone do that?" the Avatar asked, something plaintive and dark in his grey eyes.

"Because," Long Feng said almost gently, "the war broke them. Joo Dee with the green eyes inside has two sons with gold eyes and a daughter with amber. Each of them has different fathers, and she never wanted any of them."

I am still working on this. It will probably be a good while before I post it, though. Once I finish the draft, I'm going to put it in a drawer for a few months before I start revising.

Of course, first I have to finish the draft.
