Policy Change: Re: Book-Buying

Starting today and applying hence forward and not retroactively, I may only buy a new book when I have finished reading an old book. Also, I may not buy a new book unless it is a) in-store, or b) when I have enough accumulated books to use Amazon/B&N Online/Borders Online's free shipping over $25 order thing.

ETA: This also applies to buying ebooks.

Also, my measuring point is "Spacehounds of IPC" onwards in the book log.

You are so much more hardcore than I am.

Although ironically the first book read for the year, for me, was an old book, and I'm gonna finish another one this weekend.

Well, I kinda really need to control my finances and the splurges on book-buying are one of the biggest things to pinpoint. So implementing this kind of control is a good thing.

Also, it means I'll finish at least two books in February since I want both "Desert of Souls" and "Late Eclipses".

The Desert of Souls sounds grand, but I try not to buy hardcovers.

Among Others was my indulgence in that direction for the quarter, I think. And oh, it was worth it. I've read it three times already. :D

So which two books are you gonna read this month?

Well, I have already finished "Spacehounds of IPC", and I am going to try to finish "Imajica" before the end of the month so I don't have to renew it again. Plus, I'm partway through "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" as an ebook. It's nice to have the reader open in the background so I can read a few pages in between surfing.

STOP BEING CREEPY.

(no, srsly. I'm reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle right now, on loan from a coworker.)

Hee! It's a... not a comfort reread. A "get up and do something, no matter how little!" reread.

Yeah. I sometimes make jokes about it. . . "My family eats the way god intended...from boxes in the freezer" but the fact that almost everything I eat is shipped and processed at least twice before I heat it up is starting to really bother me.

So I'm reading it to motivate myself to do SOMETHING to improve. By the time the summer farmer markets start up, I want to be cooking everything I eat at least one day a week.

(I SWEAR you are stalking my bookshelves. Imajica is also on MY to-read ...um, urban sprawl, although it's in a box in the storage locker, so I can't pick it up this month and join you. :P )

Yeah, I'm trying to do something similar. Also, growing some heirloom vegetables but that's been a long time coming for a variety of reasons.

(Heh. It's an... interesting book. Very... I am not sure if dense is the right word, but it feels like it. Packed full of stuff. I had to put it down for a few weeks after I finished chapter thirty so I could read a few palate-cleansers.)
