[PotC/Matrix Fic] Jack In
Title: Jack In
Characters: Jack Sparrow
Word Count: 400+
Rating: PG
Summary: In his cell in Port Royale, Jack does what he can to get out.
Jack In
***
Jack had a way with the code. Back when he'd still been just a background part of the world, he'd generated pseudo-random numbers for the System. Not everything that made up humans' lives were caused by other humans - the System could trust them to war and raid and all the other fun little occurrences that made life interesting. But sometimes you just needed a hurricane to run over the entire Caribbean, or a fog, or a letter from England to arrive. All parts of life no human in the Matrix had any control over.
Now that he was out, he still knew how to talk to the probability tables. When a situation got a mite... difficult, all he had to do was throw random numbers in until something helpful happened.
Of course, randomness wasn't always helpful.
Cannon boomed in the night. Jack sat up in his cell. "I know those guns!"
He peered out through the bars of the window, alternating between the pseudo-human vision of Port Royale at night and a purely program look at the underlying code. "... It's the Black Pearl."
He threw imaginary numbers at the probability tables in frustration. The Pearl! He'd dealt with Davy Jones for her, and no one sane dealt with Davy Jones! Then that rotten Zionist rebel Barbossa had mutinied, and the properties of the Black Pearl got applied to the, heh, pirate connection between his ship and the Matrix.
Well, he'd gotten back at the bastard for that. Last he heard, the viruses in the old cache of data had riddled Barbossa's ship and systems. They wouldn't let him back into Zion for fear of it spreading.
The Pearl continued to bombard the port. Jack grinned slightly - just a little change to trajectory on some of those cannon balls, and one might smash open the wall of his cell. 'Well, Governor, despite being a complete prig of an Agent with an almighty stick up my ass, I couldn't prevent Captain Jack Sparrow from escaping in the confusion. I must delete myself in shame.'
He plucked numbers out of the parts of himself humans didn't have the ability to see and threw them at the probability tables. Cannonballs shifted closer, closer- ah!
It blew through the wall of the other cell without harming a single of the human prisoners.
"Praise be!" one of them cried as they scurried out through the hole. Then one glanced back at him. "My sympathies, friend - you've no manner of luck at all!"
-End-

I really like the idea of Jack being able to produce random code... and being able to see two things at once - the Matrix code and what humans see. Super neat! It would be awesome to rewatch the movie and think of Jack having control over the crazy random happenstances that happen around him... ;)
Interestingly enough, I've been listening to the soundtracks for all three movies all morning as I do my homework. Finding a notification for this fic in my e-mail inbox was a nice little moment of synergy. :3 Well done!
Thank you so much for writing! :D You are awesome.

Man, I adore The Matrix trilogy. Having it click in my head how to do a crossover just made me giggle and glee. Especially with getting to write a fair number of the main characters as programs. I loved the Exiled programs in Reloaded so much. Such a cool concept.
Hee! PotC trilogy or Matrix trilogy? ;-)
I'm listening to the "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon" soundtrack right now myself. Man, that's a good movie. Well, okay, the movie itself is a summer blockbuster but a) Andy Lau is extraordinarily hot, and b) the soundtrack is amazing.

I am definitely going to have to pick up that soundtrack too! :D I <3 movie soundtracks... sometimes more than the actual movies themselves. ;)

Definitely pick it up. So worth it. (I also suggest watching the movie sometime, if only to bask in Andy Lau's hotness. Look, a trailer! (http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi641833241/) Also, the music in the trailer is X-Ray Dog and has nothing to do with the movie's soundtrack at all.)

Probably the only way I'll write more of this is if someone wins it in an auction, but it is a lot of fun!

That is the problem with using random-number generation to get luck. ;-)
