- Mai resents it, just a little bit, how much her parents seem to dote on Tom-Tom. She is certain they never loved her that much. (She's wrong.)

- Mai is a noble of Red Chrysanthemum Island, though she's from one of the junior branches. Her cousin Zhikazu is closer to inheriting the daimyo-ship than her, and Zhikazu isn't very close to it either.

- Mai learned how to play mahjong from some of the household servants. Her parents never found out who taught her, but they scolded her fiercely when they caught her playing a few hands with the sailors on the way over to Omashu.

Nifty. I figure Mai's parents certainly aren't doing things to spite her, there's just a bit of- squeaky wheel combined with she seems like she's doing fine in a very high-stakes level of society.
