The editor of Apex Magazine has declared that the November issue will be entirely an Arab/Muslim issue. Check it out.

Advance Notice: 20Spec Anthology

A soon-to-be-open anthology for science-fiction/fantasy/horror set in the Roaring 20s.

Warrior Wisewoman 4 is open to submissions.

Seems to be a science-fiction anthology focusing on strong women.

Additionally, Harlequin has two romances set in Tang China available this month as e-books: Buttefly Swords and The Taming of Mei Lin. Butterfly Swords should be available as dead-tree next month, while The Taming of Mei Lin will be an e-book exclusive.

If you are at all into romance stories, I recommend picking up one or the other to encourage publishers like HQN to publish more non-European romances.

Maiko Week 2010

[livejournal.com profile] compaubigbang: Complete AU Big Bang. Any fandom, any characters, any crossovers, so long as it is 20k words and a complete AU. (The fusion!crossovers we tend to do around here would fit this perfectly, actually.)
beckyh2112: (Avatar: Earth Kingdom)
The Racebending Revenge Ficathon, a challenge to write a fic of at least five hundred words where you make a white character a Character of Color and show how this changes things.

I am, as ever, an easy mark for a rough-luck story. Which is why I'm telling you guys about [livejournal.com profile] graduate_maria, a fandom auction that I am not putting anything up for1. Here is [livejournal.com profile] rm's explanation of what it is all about.

1. Unless someone asks nicely and is willing to be very patient, since I still have three other auction fics to write.

Bidding for [livejournal.com profile] gulf_aid_now auctions ends at 11pm PDT June 18/2am EDT June 19. I have an auction up here.

Bidding to help [livejournal.com profile] fire_and_a_rose ends on June 24. I have an offer up here.

Innsmouth Free Press Fundraising

Now back to writing.
beckyh2112: (Torture Rats)
I like Lovecraft. His stories generally don't work as horror for me, but I love the language, the fantastic worlds and descriptions in them, and the few times the horror has hit me, it's hit me but good.

So, imagine my delight when I discovered The Innsmouth Free Press. It's a 'zine dedicated to Lovecraftian horror. :D

They're currently holding a fundraiser for 2010. I think they're awesome, but I currently have very limited funds with which to donate to them. But maybe some of my readers do!

As an added bonus, for every $1 USD donated, you can claim 100 words of requested story from me.1 Just use LJ's note feature to talk to me if you want to claim.

1. Yes, this does mean I won't be posting any request memes for a while. Sorry, folks, I've got a lot of owed writing to focus on.

[livejournal.com profile] gulf_aid_now: A fandom auction to raise money to help the Gulf in the wake of the oil spill. I know I post links to a lot of fandom auctions, but this particular one is very near and dear to my heart. I live on the Gulf Coast, and this oil spill is hurting my city.

Since this is personal to me, I am putting up a fic offer for AtLA, Tortall, and Transformers fanfiction.

[livejournal.com profile] fire_and_a_rose and her family are in debt to cover medical bills. Being chronically ill in the USA is expensive, and her mother is about ready to start not accepting treatment so there's more money to spend on her daughter's treatments. More details and the auction are available here.

A different sort of fic offer from me.
beckyh2112: (Book of Fanfic)

A multi-fandom fanfic meme where you post a particular "never seen it, but SO want to read it" wish and (hopefully) someone claims it and writes it. Also, you look through other people's wishes and see if there's anything there that speaks to you as something to write. Fun for all!

[livejournal.com profile] debsliverlovers will be ending this weekend at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday, May 23rd.

I have two auctions up:
- a New Orleans-themed care package
- at least 1000 words of Avatar: the Last Airbender fanfic
beckyh2112: (Shakespeare Pwns J00!)
[livejournal.com profile] debsliverlovers is raising money to get a live donor across the USA to Deb Mensinger for testing and hopefully surgery to transplant a liver. Deb has porphyria, a genetic condition that has slowly destroyed her liver. She has reached the point where she requires a liver transplant to survive.

Her brother has volunteered to act as a live donor, however he is of limited means right now, and her insurance will only cover so much. This auction is raising money to get him to her, get him tested for compatibility, and hopefully transplant a lobe of his liver into her. In six to eight weeks, both livers will regenerate into fully healthy organs and Deb will never have porphyria again.

I heard about this through [livejournal.com profile] rm and checked it out myself. It is entirely legit.

The auctions will run from Saturday May 1 at 12:01am Eastern Daylight Time to Sunday May 23 at 11:59pm EDT.

I have two offers up: one for a New Orleans-themed care package and one for fanfiction.

Forty-Eight Hour Book Challenge - Reading For Change

In which YA author Karen Healey (Guardian of the Dead, Maori-based urban fantasy) sets out to read and review as many YA books in forty-eight hours as she can manage. You pledge and nominate a book for her to read, she tries to get her hands on it to actually read.

Your pledges will go to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation:

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is an organisation founded by a father whose two daughters and their mother were brutally murdered. The foundation is dedicated to helping children who have suffered from or witnessed violence - often in their homes and schools, where they should be safest. Their efforts include the Refuge Therapeutic Support Program, and the National Centre Against Bullying.

Do what you can, folks.

Cool things I am into: Kickstarter and Kiva.

Kickstarter is a funding project/platform for creative types. Basically, you put up a project with a tangible goal and a specific bottom-line (opening a butcher's shop, issuing a print run of a short story contest winners collection, doing a documentary, whatever). You provide various gifts to backers who provide x amounts of money (such and such at $5, such and such at $25, such and such at $500, whatever intervals you like), then you advertise and try to get people to pledge to support your project. You've got anywhere between 1-90 days, depending on what you pick, to make the goal. If you do, you get the money and it's your job to complete the project and get the backers their promised gifts. If you don't, well, no money and the backers' credit cards don't get billed. Pretty cool.

I'm backing about two or three different things right now, but two of them are pretty far out on their deadlines. However, this one is only ten days away and only 50% funded. It's a project to fund another five months of weekly issues for an indie-scene New Orleans, LA 'zine. That being my hometown, I definitely want to support it.

Kiva is a charity micro-lending site. It connects donors with various entrepreneurs around the world. You lend a minimum of $25 to a particular person/project. If it gets fully funded, they will slowly pay you back while they use your money to improve their lives. If it's not fully funded, you get the money back. In both cases, it comes back as Kiva Credit rather than cash, which you can use to donate to someone else. Very cool.

I've got about $75 in the system right now, and I've been a member for about a year now. I tend to focus on female entrepreneurs for various personal reasons, with a lot of my loans going into Africa and South America.
