Aug. 9th, 2011 10:27 am16. Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
For me to read a story, it needs to have a summary. (Exceptions: high recs from friends or people who know I'd like it anyway.) However, writing summaries is a pain in the ass for me. Trying to find the balance between "vague enough not to spoil" and "interesting enough to entice people to read" is tricky, tricky.
Coming up with them is usually an exercise in "what is the story about, what is going on, and how can I encapsulate that in a handful of sentences without giving the game away?". Thus, coming up with summaries is of the devil. *groans*
