I finally put my finger on something that’s been bugging me about a fanfic series I am otherwise enjoying very much.

The look Rex gave Cody could only be described as besotted, and it was visible even through his bucket. The sight made a sharp jolt of envy go through Fox. He wanted that sort of relationship for himself.

This line appears in the first story of the series. I’ve been waiting for the payoff ever since. Which has been about half a year at this point.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s been plenty of romance. It’s a great fic series! There just hasn’t been any romance that hits that specific bit. I thought we might get that with the Fox/Wolffe that crops up later on, but the authors are going for a queerplatonic angle there. And the other significant romantic partner has been very much established as being dumb as a box of hammers when it comes to emotions.

But, as things currently stand, I don’t think I’ll get the payoff that specific line made me think I would get. That’s not something the authors need to fix, either.

But it’s something.
